It all began with light. In the truest sense, photography is ‘the study of light’, and it may be that I was destined for it from the moment I opened my eyes. As a child, my favorite toys were always those that lit up, I would reach for and play with every flashlight I could get my hands on. One particularly frugal Christmas, my mother got me a single lightbulb, and I treasured it and remember it fondly to this day. The lightbrite was another favorite toy of my youth. As I grew up, I deep fondness for being outside at twilight into night grew, as I took in how our world is illuminated through our own light. Nothing catches my eye quite like beautiful light, whether artificial or natural, and the way it’s crafted to flow through a space. Very frequently when I’m out with my wife and friends, I’ll peel off from the conversation and lift my camera. The friend will look where my lens is pointed and say, quizzically, “what is he photographing?” My wife, understanding me so clearly, tells them knowingly:
“The Light.”
