1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge
Update: April 19, 2025:
Years later, these images still call out to me.
This gloomy mood, the soft glow of the lights on the wet pavement, the austerity of the rocks and winter trees, the faint outline of buildings in the distance - every thing about this still brings me a deep comfort. I attribute my affinity for this sort of scene to my birth and formative years in Oregon. Though I spent most of my childhood in Mississippi, the first five years of my life were in the temperate rainforest of the Pacific Northwest. I am coming to find later in life that the impact of seeing such rainy weather and daylight filtered through tree leaves has a profound impact on how I see the world, and what my eye is drawn to when I am out making images. Some people will call a wet, overcast day dreary or even nasty …
I call it home.
On a dark and rainy day I walked the shimmering streets of Dumbo, making my way to the 1 Hotel for a Creative Mornings meet up, the first one I'd ever been to. The city is beautiful in the rain, and the hotel was jaw dropping. There was a serenity to it in the soft light. It made for a cozy and contemplative day.
