Pier A Harbor House

2015

I’m pretty sure I was in this area for a birthday party, and I got there early, so I wandered around and shot these.

2016 was very early in my “Shoot everything everywhere” Neighborhood Guides project for Nooklyn. Having such a project pushed me to become a better photographer. I recommend you do something similar, set yourself a project that’s open, that you can iterate on, that gives you an impetous to look everywhere for images to add, and add to it constantly.

It’s too bad I didn’t add all these to my website over all those years, but hey, better late than never.

Oops, Revision! A friend checked in about this, and I checked the EXIF data closer. September 17th 2015. So this was before I even started at Nooklyn. This is why you should keep a journal, people.

In those early days, I had a tendency toward over exposure, because bright was the winning look on Instagram. But you can see with the two exposures of the clock tower that I was interested in protecting my highlights, which eventually became a huge focus with every images.

It’s very, very rare now that I let any part of my image be over exposed, but I do try to push back against that tendency by trying to selectively say “it’s okay, this part can be blown out.”

There are no rules.
