Wildwood, New Jersey

A beloved haunt of film photographers looking for beachside modernist googie architecture and glowing signs in the dark of night.

Here are some photos I took during a trip in May 2015 before I knew any of that, and it appealed to me greatly even then.

Night on the Boardwalk

If I recall correctly, I was experimenting with getting the exposure right so that the neon came out as the right color, rather than having a white glow in the middle. The Mariner’s Arcade sign is still a bit too bright for that, but some of the others hit the mark. It’s a thing I still see and know to look out for when shooting neon signs these days.

Beach Kites

This round spiraling kite always reminds me of the Zone Eater / Hoover from Final Fantasy 6 / III

He’s gonna eat ya up.
