Reverie Farm — A Timeless Connecticut Estate in Light and Landscape
18th Century Stone & Shingle Estate in Litchfield, CT
Perched high above the rolling fields of Litchfield County, Reverie Farm stands as a quintessential expression of New England’s storied architectural heritage — and it was a dream to photograph. Nestled on just over 101 acres of sweeping terrain, this late 18th-century stone and shingle estate is more than a remarkable home; it is a living tapestry of light, material, and space that unfolds with quiet drama at every turn.
The main residence, built in 1799, spans nearly 7,000 square feet and achieves an elegant balance of Georgian-Federal, Dutch Colonial, and European architectural influences — its sculptural form and fine details evoking the sense of a storybook setting. Inside, the home’s intimate yet grand spaces — from multiple fireplaces to the historic pub room thought to be the oldest part of the structure — present a rich canvas of textures, proportions, and natural light that only truly come alive through thoughtful photography.
The estate’s layered history extends beyond its walls. Reverie Farm was once the home of American Abstract Expressionist painter Cleve Gray and author Francine du Plessix Gray, lending the property a legacy rooted in creativity and artistic life. The antique barn that served as Gray’s studio, the dance studio with apartment, and the guest house are among the numerous outbuildings that speak to a way of living both functional and inspired.
Outdoors, the estate feels like a composition in three dimensions. Garden paths weave through ancient trees, a privately situated Gunite pool nestles among mature plantings, and a classic tennis court sits framed by the natural rhythm of the site. From every corner, views unfold — whether toward tranquil hay fields, distant wooded ridges, or the quiet shimmer of nearby Lake Waramaug.
Documenting a property of this caliber demands more than technical skill. It requires an eye attuned to historical nuance, a feel for how light sculpts volume and surface, and a sensitivity to place that speaks to both luxury and legacy. Whether you’re showcasing architectural craftsmanship, expansive landscapes, or the lived-in character of a historic estate, I bring a refined visual language that elevates listings for discerning buyers, architects, and designers alike.
If you’re representing luxury real estate, architectural firms, or private estates turned hotel resorts seeking compelling imagery that captures both the beauty and the story of extraordinary properties, let’s connect.
On a personal note
This is quite possibly the most charming home I’ve ever seen and had the pleasure of photographing.
Shot over the course of a half-day from noon to twilight, I explored the vast home and acreage with the current owner and real estate agents listing the property - long time friends Andrew Gates and Angelica Von Drak. The homeowner had experience assisting an architecture photographer for many years, and a love of floral arrangements and botanicals, so she had a vast array of flowers for us to use throughout the house as we shot.
It was a thrill of a shoot, and such a beautiful place to capture - and I got some of my favorite images of year, or perhaps even my career, shooting this lovely place.
